37) FLIGHT TEAM TRANSPORTS-GENERAL

Most flight programs are obligated to follow CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems) requirements. You can help with this effort by observing the following:

  • The unanimous cockpit/cabin concept shall be utilized. This means that any crew member may request to terminate transport or discontinue emergent operations in the interest of safety. Any such request will be honored without question.

  • The patient compartment of the ambulance must remain at a temperature between 68°F and 78°F.

  • All flight crew bags and equipment shall be secured or placed in the forward cabinet.

Crew interactions:

  • When first encountering a flight crew, introduce yourself to the team (and patient/family if practical).

  • Communicate with the crew about the plan for offloading.

  • Assist with transferring bags/equipment from the aircraft to the ambulance.

  • Once the patient is in the ambulance, ask the flight crew what they need to be ready for transport. (House Oxygen, Inverter Power, etc).

  • Prior to departure, do the following:

    • Confirm destination.

    • Provide an ETA.

    • Verify that the team has all their bags (including drug bag) and paperwork.

    • Verify that all patient belonging are onboard.

Upon arrival the destination facility:

  • Assist with transferring the patient to bed.

  • Assist the flight crew with cleaning equipment.
